Learn more about the origin of Ria Formosa

12.12.2014 // Natura Algarve

18.000 years ago the sea was 120 meters below the current sea level leaving uncovered a large extension of the continental platform.

Large quantities of sand accumulated along the base of this platform forming flooded strings that later became the barrier islands. Simultaneously as alluvial material was being deposited along the lagoon space marshes and islets were created inside the lagoon.

The constant deposit of sediments increases the isolation towards the marine environment and speeds the culmination of the Ria which will tend to acquire more terrestrial characteristics as it ages with no interference on its natural evolution.
