The barrier islands of Ria Formosa

In a day…. relax in a paradise yet to be discovered

The lake system of Ria Formosa is formed by five “barrier-islands”:

• Deserta
• Culatra
• Armona
• Tavira
• Cabanas

Explore three of these islands and discover their stories, culture and characteristics.

The first stop will be on Barreta Island; uninhabited but used by local fisherman to store their fishing nets and tools…

Take a walk along its long white sandy seashores and collect lots of beautiful and different sea shells. Then we continue our trip to our next stop: Culatra Island. Walk to the lighthouse in the small community of Farol and take a refreshing dive into the crystal clear waters of the southernmost beach in Portugal. Continuing aboard our boat, Learn about Hangares in Culatra Island and its historical importance in the anti-submarine defence during WW1. On our return you’ll go past Armona Island, and the Nature Park of Ria Formosas Head Court.
