Egretta garzetta Ria Formosa is recognized for its biodiversity and ecological significance, considered an IBA (learn more about the portuguese IBAs in here). It has a unique environmental conditions that allow for breeding of numerous species of birds. The Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (BirdLife International Partner) has identified the following species that can be observed in this area:

  • Common redshank
  • Eurasian curlew
  • Bar-tailed godwit
  • Kentish plover
  • Pied avocet
  • Eurasian spoonbill
  • Greater flamingo
  • White stork
  • Little tern
  • Grey heron
  • Audouin´s gull
  • Golden plover
  • Caspian tern

On a fantastic boat tour Natura Algarve provides you the possibility to observe many species of birds of the Ria Formosa and rich walks full of odors, tastes and unique landscape. We sail on the secondary and shallow channels with our electric engine on the front of the boat. This allow us to approach the birds in silence and without disturbance.
